Weekend Retreat by Amy Dundon: Featuring a passenger ferry coming into Bald Head Island. The island can only be reached via a two mile trip across the Cape Fear River from Southport, North Carolina. Bald Head Island is the site of Old Baldy, which is the state's oldest standing lighthouse built in 1817. Automobiles are not permitted on the island to preserve the peace, tranquility, and natural beaches. The island has 12,000 acres with 10,000 acres of natural beach, marsh, and maritime forest preserves.
