The Great Cross features an 11-foot tall bronze statue of Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales in front of The Great Cross. Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales is considered to be the first parish priest and the first pastor in the United States of America. The Great Cross is located on the beautiful grounds of Mission Nombre De Dios in St. Augustine, Florida. The cross is imposing at over 200 feet tall with outdoor altar to commemorate the first Mass that was celebrated on September 8, 1565 by the first Spanish settlers that arrived in the United States. It is located on the Matanzas Bay.
St. Augustine is a popular tourist destination and is thought to be the oldest city in America. The city is known for its Spanish colonial architecture and is located near the beach. We have visited St. Augustine many times over the years when visiting a relative in Florida. It is a great place to visit with lots of history and amazing art galleries. The beach is very close also for those who love sun and surf! The Christmas Lights are impressive and a wonderful time of year to visit. My husband and I were married in Florida and had photographs taken on the grounds of Mission Nombre De Dios in front of The Great Cross and Our Lady de la Leche Shrine chapel. We were able to visit recently and I took some photographs!
