Description
Massachusetts State House by Amy Dundon: A photographic image of the Massachusetts State House. The state house is located in Beacon Hill, a neighborhood of Boston.
The Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) and the offices of the Governor of Massachusetts are located within this building. The Massachusetts State House was designed by architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in January of 1798. The dome was originally made of wood. It was covered with copper in 1802 by the Revere Copper Company (owned by Paul Revere). In 1874 the dome was gilded with gold leaf, however, during World War II, the dome was painted gray to prevent reflections and to protect the city during blackouts. The dome was re-gilded in 1997 with a cost of more than $300,000.
