Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales is considered to be the first parish priest and the first pastor in the United States of America. The Great Cross is located on the beautiful and serene grounds of Mission Nombre De Dios in St. Augustine, Florida. The cross is imposing at over 200 feet tall and is located in front of Matanzas Bay.
St. Augustine is a popular tourist destination and is thought to be the oldest city in the United States. The city is known for its Spanish colonial architecture and is located near the beach. We have visited St. Augustine many times over the years when visiting a relative in Florida. It is a great place to visit with lots of history and amazing art galleries. The beach is very close also for those who love sun and surf! The Christmas Lights are impressive and a great time to visit the city. My husband and I were married in Florida and had photographs taken on the grounds of Mission Nombre De Dios in front of The Great Cross and Our Lady de la Leche Shrine chapel.
